Heating with high voltages? No problem!

⏱ approx. 6 minutes

To meet the requirement for ever-increasing performance demands, electrified systems are increasingly aiming for voltages of up to 900 volts. The numerous benefits of the voltage increase are driving technical development not only in automotive electrification, but also the entire transportation industry.

Electric power is calculated from the product of the applied voltage and the effective current. Consequently, either an increase in voltage or in current is necessary for a power increase. If the voltage remains at a standard rating of 230V or 400V, this inevitably results in an increase in current. This is technically limited and leads to an enlargement of connectors, power modules and cable cross-sections. A number of associated negative effects - such as the increase in thermal losses, the increase in required installation space, the increase in weight, and costs due to the need of additional copper – make an increase in voltage unavoidable.

At the same time, the high efficiency of electric systems in transportation and special-purpose vehicles inevitably leads to the need for electric heating systems.

DBK offers high-voltage heating systems using PTC Technology. Based on many years of experience in working with PTC Technology at high voltages, we designed an entirely new Insulated PTC Air Heater “HRP HV” for direct installation in high voltage systems.

Despite voltages of up to 600V, the insulation and robust design of the heater allow for easy handling and space-saving installation directly into the high-voltage system. The elimination of plastic parts for protection against high voltages, and its high resistance to dirt, moisture, and vibration, are only some of the advantages of the HRP HV series. They also come with all the benefits of PTC Heating Technology:

  • Safe heating - PTC heating elements come with a fixed maximum temperature which cannot be exceeded due to the PTC effect. Safe heating in protection class II without any additional thermal protection.

  • Efficient heating - PTC heating elements dynamically adapt their performance to their environment. Low power consumption at low heat dissipation. No additional controls needed.

  • Worldwide heating - PTC heating elements can be operated in a wide range of voltages at almost constant power and are approved to worldwide industry standards.
